Narradrama integrates the principles of Narrative Therapy with Drama Therapy and other Creative Arts Therapies.  It is a strength-based model for self discovery that projects a future image of the healthy and creative self.  Proudly, the Drama Therapy Institute of Los Angeles has as its founder the originator of Narradrama, Dr Pamela Dunne.  Dr. Dunne and her team of esteemed faculty bring you this exciting new  specialization program under the Drama Therapy umbrella.  With two certification levels to choose from, the Narradrama Training Program can be an excellent supplement to any professional’s credentialing.

Formats for Training Programs

 Training Program for Narradrama Facilitator is available in two formats (1) Intensive (normally applicable to foreign programs outside the US) and (2) Extended (taught typically one day a week over a longer period of time).

 

Degree Requirements

Master’s Degree in Theatre, Psychology or Education (or related approved master’s-completed or in process). BA accepted for individuals with background in drama therapy, dance therapy, psychology, education or other approved BA

Prerequisites

Prerequisites for Psychology or Theater Background

 9 units in theater or 126 hours of volunteer work in community or improvisational theatre

9 units of psychology classes (i.e. Abnormal Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Theory, Group Psychotherapy or other approved Psychology or Counseling related classes)

9 units of drama therapy classes (Drama Therapy, Sociodrama and Psychodramatic Techniques {or Psychodrama}, Drama Therapy with Special Populations or other approved Drama Therapy classes).

Prerequisites for Educational Studies Background

9 units in theater or 126 hours of volunteer work in community or improvisational theater

9 units (Education Based) Storytelling for Teachers, Creative Methods and Reflections in Teaching, Creative Drama in Education or other approved Education classes.

9 units of drama therapy classes (Drama Therapy, Sociodrama and Advanced Psychodramatic Techniques, {or Psychodrama}, Drama Therapy with Special Populations or other Drama Therapy approved classes).

 

Narradrama Facilitator- Award of Course Completion

Student must complete 13 units of Narradrama instruction and 400 internship hours. For every 10 clinical hours, there must be 1 hour of supervision.

Fundamentals of Narradrama – (available as 4 separate shorter classes- 3  units)

  • Fundamentals and Steps ( 1 unit-2 days)
  • Transformational Stories (1 unit-2 days )
  • Pivotal Moments (5 unit 1 day )
  • Narradrama and Neuroscience (5 unit 1 day)

Narradrama Therapy: Expanding Techniques, Witnessing and Healing Practices (available as 4 separate classes- 3 units)

  • Narradrama Techniques (1 unit- 2 days)
  • Narradrama Witnessing Practices or Narradrama in Community Work (.5 unit 1 day)
  • Intersectional Identities in the Therapeutic Encounter (.5 unit I day)
  • Projective and Innovative Techniques in Narradrama ( 1 unit, 2 days)

Partner’s in Healing: Narradrama and Narrative Therapy (A,B,C and D)—3 units)

Narradrama as a Three Act Play (3 units)

Narradrama with Children and Teens or Narradrama with ADHD ( 5 units- 1 day)

Narradrama with Families or Narradrama with Prisoners (5 units- 1 day)

 

Master’s level student Internship Requirement

400 hours of supervised work in Narradrama (1 to 10 hours to supervision ratio- –may count preparation hours).

 

Course Substitutions for Prerequisites

Specific prerequisites and competencies in drama, creative arts, and psychology that are different from the above would need to be considered on an individual basis.

 

Clarification of Degree Requirements and Qualifications for Narradrama Trainer

Master’s degree is required as well as completion of Facilitator Award.

After receiving Narradrama Trainer Award, individual is qualified to train other professionals in Narradrama.

 

Trainer of Narradrama –Award of Completion Requirements – 13 units

Prerequisites

Complete Narradrama Facilitator Award and all prerequisites for that Award. 3 units narrative therapy (may be university courses or workshops). 6 additional units drama therapy core classes (Creative Drama, Research and Assessment in Drama Therapy or advanced approved drama therapy elective.)

400 hours (includes clinical, supervision and preparation time- 1 to 10 ratio).

Restoried Script Performance (3 units)

Narradrama Advanced Techniques or Equivalent (3 units)

Narrative and Narradrama; Advanced (3 units)

Narradrama Special Topic (3 units)

Choose a combination below to equal 1 unit:

Narradrama Applied: Narradrama with Trauma or Domestic Violence or Narradrama (1 unit or two day class)

Approach with Women’s Issues (.5, 1 day class)

Narradrama in the Community, Education or Business (.5 and 1 day class)

Other Narradrama Special Population (.5 and 1 day class)

 

Narradrama Trainer –Award of Completion

Upon completing course requirements, prerequisites, and internship hours, students will receive a Narradrama Trainer Award. Receiving this award shows an advanced level of proficiency to train others in Narradrama. Course substitutions may be made with consent of Director of Program.
